Quintealia Cato
Ms. Quintealia Cato is a lifelong resident of the City of Midway, Florida. Quintealia is a 1999 graduate of the University of Florida. Upon graduation with a degree in Public Relations, Ms. Cato returned to the Big Bend area and began work. Quintealia is now a licensed mortgage broker and has worked as an accountant for the Leon County Health Department for the last three years. Ms. Cato currently serves as councilwoman on the Midway City Council, a member of the Gadsden County Farm Bureau, member of the Florida League of Cities Fiscal Stewardship Policy Council and a few other municipal committees.
She is launching her campaign for the Florida House District 8 currently held by Representative Curtis Richardson. Mr. Richardson cannot seek re-election because of term limits. The seat is historically Democratic and encompasses most of Gadsden, Leon, and parts of Wakulla Counties.
Ms. Cato is committed to protecting Florida farmers. She strongly opposes legislation that classifies manure as hazardous waste. It is her belief that this legislation threatens the financial stability of small farmers and unfairly adds a layer of bureaucracy for large farmers. Ms. Cato believes that such legislation will spike the cost of production and therefore weaken the competitiveness of farmer. She will work to expand potential markets for Florida products in the Caribbean, South America, and Africa. To supplement this effort, Ms. Cato will advocate for more equitable trade agreements, work with State offices to identify new opportunities and develop training programs to help farmers understand and access emerging markets.
Quintealia supports strengthening farm families. She is particularly troubled by the educational gap between agricultural schools and communities and those in urban areas. She supports assisting rural communities in pursuing and implementing wireless technologies to facilitate outside the classroom learning. Ms. Cato will work to create special funding opportunities specifically for the professional development of teachers in agricultural areas. She is committed to expanding state funded opportunities for community based and faith-based organizations.
Quintealia Cato is the only Democratic candidate for this seat with a clear plan and passion for agricultural issues. From her family roots through the college years and now as an adult, Ms. Cato has worked to understand the issues affecting farmers overall and Florida farmers in particular.
